Did you know that white bread can cause infertility? White bread contains gluten which can cause infertility in both men and women.

Gluten is a a protein that is found in wheat, barley and rye which means any foods that are made out of one of these three things contain gluten.

Common foods that contain gluten include pizza, bread, pasta, cake, cookies, crackers and more. Gluten is also found in less obvious foods such as soy sauce, mustard, gravy powders, salad dressings and luncheon meat.

Gluten intolerance causes a condition called Celiac Disease which affects millions of people worldwide.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Infertility

Symptoms of Celiac Disease

As many as 2 million Americans or more suffer from celiac disease but don’t even know it because the symptoms are so varied.

Symptoms of celiac diesase after eating gluten can include chronic diarrhea, gas, bloating, acid reflux, and constipation.

Studies have shown that infertility is more common in women with untreated Celiac Disease than those without it. It can also increase the chance of miscarriage or premature births. And lead to menstrual irregularities and hormone disruption.

In men, Celiac Disease can reduce testosterone and cause a low sperm count or abnormal sperm.

Treating Celiac Disease

There is no “cure” for celiac disease. Those who suffer from it must avoid eating gluten for life in order to avoid health problems.

Get screened for Celiac Disease if you suffer from repeated miscarriages or are unable to conceive for unknown reasons – especially if you suffer any of the most common symptoms.

In severe, untreated cases of celiac disease, mal-absorption of fat, calcium, magnesium, fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K, folate, iron, and vitamin B12 can occur.

There are gluten free bread, cookies and snack options for those who suffer from celiac disease and cannot consume gluten.

In the Organic Fertility Bible we talk more about celiac disease and overcoming it with the Fertility Diet.

What Causes Male Infertility

Of the known causes of infertility in a relationship, 50% is caused by female infertility and 50% is caused by male infertility. To date, there are over 2 million infertile married couples in the United States

Infertility is suspected when couples are unable to conceive after at least one year of unprotected intercourse. Most couples will conceive during this time; if you cannot, you should be tested for infertility.

What is Male Infertility?

First of all, let’s look at what is considered “infertile” by the medical profession. The normal method of diagnosing male infertility is through sperm analysis.

Sperm count, or sperm concentration, measures the concentration of sperm in a man’s ejaculate — this is a little different from total sperm count, which may also be tested.

In the western world, the average sperm concentration today is around 60 million per milliliter of semen. Anything less than 20 million sperm per milliliter is considered abnormal.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Male Infertility

However, characteristics measured by semen analysis are only some of the factors credited with infertility in males.

One source states that 30% of men with a normal semen analysis actually have abnormal sperm function. Conversely, men with poor semen analysis results may go on to father children.

What Causes Male Infertility?

Here’s the bad news: In the majority of cases of male infertility and low sperm quality, no clear cause can be identified with current diagnostic methods.

Science often just can’t figure it out.

What we do know is how sperm development takes place. Energy-generating organelles (mitochondria) inside each sperm power its tail (flagellum) so that it can swim to the female egg once inside the vagina.

Sperm development is ultimately controlled by the endocrine (hormonal) system. The entire process takes more than two months.

So, perhaps any lifestyle activities that promote and nourish the hormonal system as well as mitochondrial function should theoretically enhance the energy in those 60 million little devils.

We’ll have a look in a moment at some lifestyle changes you can make to improve the quality of your sperm. First, let’s have a look at some factors that can negatively impact the health of your swimmers:

Illness: Any illness during the cycle of sperm development can affect the health of your mature sperm — even if your illness has cleared up. So think about whether you were ill at any time in the two months preceding your examination.

Hormone disorders: Since the endocrine system (hormone system) controls the production of sperm, any hormone disorder will of course disrupt the cycle of healthy sperm production.

Reproductive anatomy trauma and obstruction: If you have sustained an injury “down there” at any time in your adult life, you may wish to mention it to your doctor if you’re struggling with issues of infertility.

Sexual dysfunction: It may be obvious, but it you can’t get your sails up, then your ship can’t sail into the harbour. If you have trouble achieving or sustaining an erection, chances are you aren’t giving your swimmers enough of a chance to find their target.

In this case, it may take longer than a year to establish whether or not infertility is an issue. If you’re concerned, see your doctor.

Some disorders can become more difficult to treat the longer they persist without treatment. Don’t hesitate to see your doctor if you think there may be a problem.

Improving Male Fertility – How to Improve Male Fertility

Male infertility can be the result of a wide variety of problems include genetic defects, past illnesses, a poor diet, and other factors. If you have a serious medical problem or problems, it is recommended that you consult a your physician for individual diagnosis and advice.

But let’s have a look at some common-sense steps you can take for improving male infertility and to help fortify the health and vitality of your sperm:

Refrain from smoking, drinking alcohol, or taking drugs. These substances can increase the rate of abnormal sperm you produce, AND affect the quality and motility of your sperm.

Avoid hot baths, hot tubs, tight underwear, and tight clothing. The temperature of your testes must be kept at an optimal range for healthy sperm production. Invest in some boxer shorts and take warm showers instead!

Distance yourself from your laptop and cell phone. Studies show that laptop computers — when used on your lap — can elevate testicular temperatures, and thereby compromise the health of your sperm. Other studies show a possible link between cell phone radio frequencies and lowered sperm motility.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Male Infertility

If that IS a phone in your pocket, you may want to take it out!

Research has shown a gradual decline in sperm production in recent decades. Whether this can be directly related to our laptops and cell phones, or other environmental factors, we don’t really know — but it’s better to play it safe.

Improving Male Infertility Naturally

There are many options available to couples struggling with infertility, ranging from natural options like acupuncture to more aggressive solutions like in vitro fertilization (IVF).

But there are also some natural home remedies that you can use to enhance your sperm quality and bolster your hormonal system. These natural methods to improve male infertility include:

Vitamin C – A daily dose of 200 to 1,000 mg of vitamin C has been shown to increase sperm count as well as sperm quality. In one research study, 30 infertile but otherwise healthy men received either 200 or 1,000 mg vitamin C versus placebo daily. All the men taking vitamin C impregnated their wives after 60 days, compared to NONE in the placebo group.

Selenium – Selenium is a trace mineral involved in many aspects of reproductive function. At least 12 different selenium-containing proteins have been identified in the testes, and at least two of them are important for normal sperm production. Low selenium levels are associated with low and abnormal sperm counts. Selenium is in high concentration in Brazil nuts — one nut contains about 50 mcg of selenium. Most selenium supplements are sold as 200 mcg, which is a good dose.

Zinc – Zinc is a crucial nutrient for testosterone production as well as normal sperm production. There is plenty of research indicating its benefits in male infertility. According to research as well as my own professional experience, most people have slight to moderate zinc deficiency. See a naturopathic doctor or nutritionally trained health care provider for a zinc taste test or a hair mineral analysis, which can help you to discover if you would benefit from extra zinc. Zinc is high in seafood and nuts. Oysters — traditionally reputed to have aphrodisiac effects — are high in zinc.

Cordyceps sinensis – This interesting fungus from the Himalayas has been creating excitement as an anti-aging nutrient in the past few years. It has shown to improve mitochondrial function (remember, mitochondria are the little energy-producing units inside cells, especially sperm), as well as increase testosterone levels.

But the bottom line here is that even if you have fewer than normal or rather sluggish troops waiting for their turn to swim to glory, it only takes one brave soldier to populate the fort, so to speak.

And if he is destined to become a hero amongst his peers, then impregnation will happen, regardless of what you do or don’t do.

Meanwhile, just enjoy some oysters and Brazil nuts, preferably in bed!

Overcoming Male Infertility With Folic Acid and Nutrition

If there was a vitamin that could reduce your risk of cancer, heart disease, stroke, depression, diabetes, memory loss, and birth defects… and increase the quality of your sperm to boot, would you take it?

Named after the word “foliage”, folic acid is found in foods like spinach and swiss chard. And yes, it can do all these things for you.

You may have heard of women taking folic acid supplements when they are trying to get pregnant. This is common practice nowadays to help ward off any chromosomal abnormalities that can develop upon conception — before a woman even knows she is pregnant.

But did you know folic acid is important for men, too? especially when it comes to overcoming male infertility.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Male Infertility

Folic Acid and Sperm

Any rapidly dividing cells, which included sperm cells, are dependent on folate for normal DNA formation.

It has been known for decades that a deficiency of folic acid in a pregnant woman may lead to very severe birth defects, including babies born with parts of their brain or spinal cord uncovered.

As a result, all white flour in North America is by law fortified with folic acid.

And women of reproductive age — especially those trying to conceive or already pregnant — are encouraged to take folic acid supplements.

Overcoming Male Infertility With Folic Acid

Folic acid and its metabolites, collectively known as folates, belong to the B vitamin group and are involved in a surprisingly large number of important biochemical processes in the body.

One of the most important roles of folic acid is to aid in the process called “methylation,” without which our chromosomes and genes cannot be properly produced or reproduced.

In one recent study, nutrient intake and sperm health in 89 healthy men were analyzed.

Those with the highest folate intake had the lowest incidence of chromosomally abnormal sperm — up to 30 percent less than the low-folate group.

Other nutrients, including beta-carotene, vitamin C, vitamin E, and zinc had no effect on chromosome defects.

A previous study examined the effect of folic acid on 65 infertile men with abnormal sperm.

Overall sperm health improved by the end of the study and moreover, among these 65 couples presenting with infertility for 3.2 years on average, 24 conceived within 6 months following the folic acid treatment.

Perhaps, in the future, the recommendation to take folic acid will be extended to men trying to conceive a child as well.

The Many Side Effects of Clomid

Clomid is the marketing name for fertility drug clomiphene, it works by stimulating ovulation an is effective about 80% of the time.

The following side effects have been reported by women who have taken Clomid.

breast discomfort

depression

dizziness or lightheadedness

headache

heavy menstrual periods or bleeding between periods

hot flashes

nausea or vomiting (not severe or continuing)

nervousness

restlessness

tiredness

trouble sleeping

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Infertility

Check with your doctor as soon as possible if any of the following side effects occur after taking Clomid:

blurred vision

double or decreased vision, or other vision problem

occurrences of “flashes of light”

sensitivity of eyes to light

symptoms of liver problems (e.g., yellow eyes or skin, abdominal pain, poor appetite, dark urine, or pale stools)

Stop taking Clomid and seek immediate medical attention right away if any of the following occur:

symptoms of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (difficulty breathing, abdominal or pelvic pain or discomfort, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, decreased amount of urine, rapid weight gain)

symptoms of a severe allergic reaction (shortness of breath, swelling of the face or throat, or hives)

Some people may experience side effects other than those listed. Check with your doctor if you notice any symptom that worries you while you are taking this medication.

Clomid also increases the risk of the following:

Ectopic Pregnancy: There is a much greater chance of ectopic pregnancy (i.e., the baby develops in one of the fallopian tubes instead of in the uterus) in women who conceive after taking Clomid. It is important to have an early ultrasound to ensure that the baby is developing inside the uterus.

Multiple Births: Clomid is most well known for being associated with multiple births. The incidence of multiple pregnancy (including twins, triplets, quadruplets, and quintuplets) can be up to 10 times greater when conception occurs during a cycle in which clomiphene therapy is taken.

Ovarian Cysts: If you experience any abdominal or pelvic pain, weight gain, discomfort, or bloating after taking Clomid, notify your doctor right away. Women with ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) may also have difficulty breathing and decreased amounts of urine. The doctor will conduct regular pelvic examinations between 2 and 3 weeks after starting each course of therapy.

Ovarian enlargement and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS): Early warning signs of OHSS include abdominal or pelvic pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and weight gain. Notify your doctor immediately if any of these symptoms occur after taking Clomid.

Vision Changes: Blurring of vision or other sight problems (such as afterimages, spots, flashes, double vision, or sensitivity to light) may occasionally occur while taking clomiphene or shortly after therapy finishes. These types of sight problems may make it more dangerous to drive a car or operate machinery, particularly under conditions where light varies. If you experience such effects, stop taking the medication and contact your doctor.

Please note that Clomid should not be taken during pregnant or while breastfeeding.

Pre Pregnancy Nutrition and Health Tips

Here is a list of 7 things to do pre pregnancy for a healthy pregnancy.

Prepregnancy Must #1 – Seek Genetic Counseling

Couples with a history of birth defects in their family should go for genetic screening to analyze their risk of passing on a birth defect to their child.

A typical session includes a review of the family history and performing a few tests to rule out specific diseases.

Prepregnancy Must #2 – Stop Drinking

One entirely avoidable birth defect is fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS). Damage from alcohol can range from mild intellectual and behavioral issues to profound disabilities or premature death. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), there is no safe level of alcohol consumption during pregnancy.

Click Here to Discover How to Optimize Your PrePregnancy Health

Prepregnancy Must #3 – Stop Smoking and Avoid Both Second and Third-Hand Smoke

While smoking has not been “proven” to cause birth defects, it does deprive the fetus of oxygen and is the most harmful of all environmental toxins. There are thousands of harmful chemicals in cigarettes and are to be avoided at all costs.

Third hand smoke is the residue that is left behind after the smoke is gone. That cigarette smell in your clothing?, that’s third hand smoke. Third hand smoke is a danger to toddlers and babies and should be avoided while trying to get pregnant as well.

According to the March of Dimes, if all pregnant women avoided smoking, the United States would see a 5 percent reduction in miscarriages, a 20 percent reduction in low-birth-weight births and an 8 percent reduction in premature deliveries.

Prepregnancy Must #4 – Avoid Environmental Toxins

Chemicals have long been suspected of causing birth defects. Avoid daily, heavy exposure to chemicals. If you work in a cleaning business, art studio or factory where there is unavoidable exposure, use gloves, masks and adequate ventilation.

Avoid exposure to lead, important when buying and restoring old furniture or renovating an older home. Those who work in the medical field should take special care to take precautions against radiation.

Prepregnancy Must #5 – Eat Healthy

Good nutrition is one of the most crucial factors in a healthy pregnancy outcome. Women should focus on eating a variety of healthy foods, with a particular emphasis on richly colored produce, whole grains, beans and legumes and lean protein sources prepregnancy.

You can also take a supplement fortified with DHA, which is the nutrient provided by foods rich in omega 3 fatty acids. The problem is that many of the best food sources of omega 3s are fatty fishes, which may have unacceptable levels of mercury. Instead, look for a supplement from a vegetarian source made from marine algae. This helps ensure healthy brain and vision formation.

You may also want to look into eat a Fertility Diet.

Prepregnancy Must #6 – Relax

Research shows that women exposed to severe stress are more likely to give birth to children with birth defects. Stress has also been linked to a higher risk of miscarriage, preterm birth and infertility.

There are a number of ways to manage stress, from counseling to yoga to biofeedback, and that a consultation with a psychologist can help.

Prepregnancy Must #7 – Go Drug Free

It goes without saying that illegal drugs are always bad. However, many prescription drugs are not safe to take during pregnancy. Always consult with your OB/GYN so he or she can do a thorough review of any prescription medicine you may be taking, especially for chronic conditions, to determine if they’re safe in pregnancy.

The Emotional Consequences of Infertility In Males

The emotional consequences of infertility in males cannot be denied, states a 2002 World Health Organization report on gender, infertility, and advanced reproduction technologies. The report reviewed more than 60 infertility studies conducted between 1975 and 2002.

The studies reported that men who experience infertility are often more distressed than the general population. One study found that men experienced extreme worry significantly more often than women did – 19 percent of men versus three percent of women.

Another study found that men felt infertility had a negative impact on their sexual relations. In fact, infertility treatment had changed the sexual relationship of 32 percent of the men studied. Two-thirds of those who reported change stated that sex had become less pleasurable.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Male Infertility

Yet other studies described improvement rather than deterioration of the marital relationship with infertility; subjects reported that problems related to infertility had resulted in a closer relationship with greater emotional intimacy.

Perhaps the most common coping strategy reported was the active pursuit of treatment.

Natural Treatments for Infertility in Males

There are many ways to combat and deal with infertility in men naturally without resorting to medical procedures or drugs which have many side effects. The following are some ways for men to deal with infertility at the source.

Take Nutritional Supplements

Many natural approaches have been proven to be successful or at least offer some hope in overcoming male infertility. Reports from around the world support the use of supplemental nutrients and herb extracts to enhance male fertility.

Since sperm formation takes almost three months, it will take at least this duration of supplementation before the benefits of a nutrient supplementation program are seen. Working with a natural health care provider can help optimize beneficial results and get you off infertility’s emotional roller-coaster of hope and disappointment.

Eat Organic

A healthy diet enhances male fertility. Eat organic food whenever possible. In 1994 the Lancet reported high sperm density among members of an organic farmers’ association who grew their products without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. The sperm count was more than twice as high in these men as in a control group.

Avoid Environmental Pollutants

Environmental pollutants in our environment such as chemicals in personal care products, BPA in plastic, and pollution lead to decreased sperm counts and abnormal sperm.

Eat A Diet For Fertility

Optimal weight and eating a healthy fertility diet should not be overlooked in the male partner of an infertile couple. Just because it’s the woman who actually gets pregnant, it doesn’t mean the man’s diet, or more accurately the results of his diet, doesn’t affect the process.

Food deprivation in men leads to a loss of sex drive and structural changes to reproductive tissue, leading to infertility. Obesity, on the other hand, can be associated with a low sperm count and impotence. Folds of fat may raise the temperature of the testicles, lower testosterone levels and elevate female hormone levels.

Everyone can enhance fertility through a healthier diet. This means getting plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains and legumes. It also means avoiding refined carbohydrates, coffee, tea, alcohol and foods with artificial additives.

Male fertility can further be enhanced by eating more oatmeal, dates, kelp, dulse and other seaweeds, black beans, kidney beans, yams, peanuts, walnuts, wheat germ and brewer’s yeast. Beneficial juices include celery, oatstraw, carrot and spinach.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Infertility

Take Fertility-Boosting Supplements

Reports from around the world support the use of supplemental nutrients to enhance fertility in both sexes. In men, the most important supplemental nutrients to enhance fertility are vitamin C, zinc and L-arginine. Vitamin C helps prevent sperm from clumping or sticking together, thus improving the chances for fertility. Safe and effective dosages are between 2,000 mg and 6,000 mg daily.

Zinc supplementation has been shown to increase both the sperm count and sperm motility. Effective dosages are between 100 mg to 200 mg daily. Low sperm counts and poor motility are also helped by supplemented L-arginine (4,000 mg daily). Arginine is found in high amounts in the head of the sperm.

Other nutrients that have been shown to improve sperm counts include essential fatty acids, chromium, selenium, copper, vitamin E, coenzyme Q10 (200 mg daily) and B-complex vitamins. Side-effects of any of these supplements are negligible in comparison to the damage done by fertility-enhancing drugs and hormones. Since sperm formation takes almost three months, it will take at least this amount of time before seeing the benefits of a nutrient supplementation program.

There is a long list of herbs known to enhance fertility. For men, recommended herbs are Avena sativa, false unicorn root, pumpkin seed, Siberian and panax ginseng, damiana and sarsaparilla. Many herbal companies market formulations containing three or more of these herbs in tincture or capsule form. Check with the natural health section of the grocery store, local health food store or with an herbalist. Nutritional assessment and treatment of vitamin and mineral imbalances by a qualified health-care practitioner are also recommended.

Acupuncture

In Asia, acupuncture theory states that each person’s vital life force or Qi (pronounced chee), circulates throughout the body in energy pathways called meridians. Disease manifests when Qi becomes weakened or out of balance. Acupuncture is the practice of correcting the flow of Qi by inserting sterile, slender, solid, stainless steel needles into designated points on the body along meridians.

Acupuncture is growing in popular acceptance and recently the American Medical Association advocated its use for certain conditions, such as back pain and post-operative care.

Good candidates for trying medical acupuncture are people who have a functional, rather than a structural reason for infertility (for example, damaged fallopian tubes are structural). Men or women with functional infertility would be encouraged to try acupuncture in addition to their holistic infertility treatment.

Prescription Drugs and Alcohol

The prescription drugs cimetidine and ranitidine for the treatment of ulcers have both been reported to produce impotence as one of their side effects. Similarly, the recreational use of street drugs and excessive alcohol use may also reduce sperm count.

A Japanese study, reported in 2004 in Archives of Andrology, found that alcohol use was significantly more common in infertile men (92 percent) than in the control group (80 percent). Use of anabolic androgenic steroids among recreational power athletes may also affect semen quality.

Click Here to Discover How to Overcome Male Infertility

Chemicals

Further, an often overlooked cause of male infertility is excess exposure to xenoestrogens, chemicals like PCBs, DDT, dioxin, other pesticides, plastics, and industrial pollutants. These are compounds that can mimic the effects of estrogen in the body. Low sperm count, prostate cancer, testicular cancer, undescended testes, and numerous other disorders have all been linked at one time or another to exposure to xenoestrogens.

Reduce your exposure to them by avoiding plastic food containers; using only unbleached coffee filters, paper, napkins, toilet tissue, and other paper products; and using only organic toiletries.

Obesity

You’ll want to eat moderately as obesity can be associated with a low sperm count and impotence, possibly because of higher temperatures caused by excess fat near the testes. Folds of fat may raise the temperature of the testicles, lower testosterone levels, and elevate female hormone levels. On the other hand, food deprivation in men leads to a loss of sex drive and structural changes to reproductive tissue leading to infertility. Optimal weight and healthy diet should not be overlooked by the male partner of an infertile couple.

Poor Lifestyle Choices

Negative lifestyles may be contributing to infertility. Therefore, if patients live healthy lifestyles, it is possible that reproductive function will improve. Evidence for all these lifestyle recommendations may not be conclusive, but rarely will following these guidelines hurt, and often they may help:

Avoid excessive heat (avoid waterbeds, saunas, hot tubs, etc.).

Limit coffee to one or two cups per day.

Do not smoke.

Do not use marijuana, cocaine, or other recreational drugs. Marijuana stays in the testes for over two weeks; so even using it once every two weeks will have a negative effect.

Exercise regularly and moderately.

Drink no more than two ounces of alcohol twice per week. Alcohol is a male reproductive tract toxin, which associates with a decrease in the percentages of normal sperm.

Maintain good nutritional habits, especially a diet rich in fresh fruits and leafy vegetables (organically grown).

Be aware of sexual problems and do not hesitate to ask for medical help.

Educate yourself about health and reproduction.

Seek emotional and/or psychological support; consider meditation to reduce stress.

Infertility and Global Warming

According to the United Nations, global fertility has declined in the past century as reflected by a decline in birth rates. At the same time the earth’s surface air temperature has increased considerably and is referred to as global warming. Could temperature change affect fertility? Research conducted at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York suggests it does.

Scientists compared yearly birth rates to global air temperatures from 1900 to 1994 and found a common pattern of change in birth rates. The report, published in 2003 in the journal Medical Hypothesis, concluded that long-term global temperature change has affected human fertility worldwide.

About Eighty-five percent of men who are diagnosed with infertility are treated with conventional medications (synthetic hormones) or surgery to repair diseased reproductive organs. However with conventional medications and surgery comes many risks and unwanted side effects.

The following are natural male fertility supplements that can be used to help combat causes of male infertility.

Herbs To Help Increase Male Fertility

The herbs listed below may be effective for improving erections, sexual desire, blood flow to the sexual organs and general sexual health with virtually no side-effects:

Panax ginseng (Korean ginseng): 500 milligrams, 1 to 3 capsules daily

Saw palmetto berry: 80 mg, 1 to 2 capsules daily

Muira puama: 500 mg, 3 to 6 capsules daily
